Young for KY House: Why the Kentucky Party should focus on legislative branch offices
by Geoff Young
The Legislative Branch is closer to the people than the Executive Branch and much closer to the people than the Judicial Branch. According to the federal and Kentucky constitutions, the Legislature is supposed to be the most powerful branch of government.

Like all the other states and the country as a whole, Kentucky has a lot of problems. We're always in the top ten poorest states and the top ten most corrupt states. The most important job of the General Assembly in Frankfort is to pass, amend, and sometimes repeal the laws of Kentucky in ways that help solve the problems and don't make the problems worse. Example: We should make the state income tax more progressive and eliminate the sales tax. The Republican-dominated Legislature wants to do the opposite, which would make Kentucky's millionaires richer and everyone else poorer.
I think what the Kentucky Party most needs is to have KYP members run for the Kentucky House of Representatives in Frankfort, the US House of Representatives in Washington, and county commissioners, city council members, and magistrates. There are a lot of corrupt, incompetent, and power-hungry judges in Kentucky. The only institution that can get them to do their jobs honestly is the Kentucky General Assembly.
Editor's note: Geoff Young declared intent to run in 2026 for KY House District 75, serving Lexington. The incumbent is Lindsey Burke (D). She won in 2022 with 2,822 votes to her opponent's 517. She spent $16k in the primary race and $8k in the general. The deadline to file with the KY Secretary of State to run in 2026 is January 9, 2026. Requirements to run for KY House:
- at least 24
- US citizen, resident of KY for at least 2 years
- $200 filing fee
- at least 100 petition signatures.
KY Representatives serve 2 year terms. If Young wins, he will serve January 2027-January 2029.
